based assessment’ organised for teachers

A two-day CBP workshop for 60 teachers on ‘Competency-based assessment’ was organised at Army Public School, Yol. The workshop aimed to familiarise teachers with the concept of competency-based teaching and assessment, question construction and effective strategies for developing higher-order thinking skills among students. The workshop was facilitated by Sonika Sharma, Principal, Gobind Public School, Dinanagar, and Meenakshi Sharotri, Shivalik International Convent Public School, Jawalamukhi, who served as resource persons and shared their expertise and valuable insights on the subject. Both resource persons provided teachers with practical insights into the characteristics of competency-based questions, assessment aligned with learning outcomes, Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), reasoning and application-based approaches to question design, and effective assessment techniques, along with Lower-Order Thinking Skills (LOTS), which form an essential foundation for progressive learning. The participants were guided on framing questions that assess students’ ability to recall, recognise, identify, define, describe and demonstrate basic concepts and factual knowledge. The workshop was highly interactive and enriching. Teachers actively participated in the sessions, shared their experiences and learned useful strategies for effectively implementing competency-based assessment in the classroom. At the conclusion of the workshop, Principal Arjun Singh presented mementoes to both resource persons and expressed his gratitude to all the participating teachers for their active contribution towards making the workshop a success.

Behavior of downstream swimming brown trout in accelerating and high flow velocity - Movement matters

Studies on active and sedated fish passing through turbines and pumps show different mortality and injury rates for both cases. Consequently, fish behavior appears to play a substantial role in these outcomes. However, direct behavioral observations in hydraulic machines using quantitative parameters to draw conclusions about the underlying mechanisms are hardly possible and remain understudied. In this study, we examined the behavior of adult brown trout (Salmo trutta) in an experimental flume under hydraulic conditions characterized by strong flow acceleration and high velocities, two key hydraulic features of turbine and pump intakes. Fish movement behavior was analyzed based on a quantitative approach to enable the analysis of swimming behavior even in flow velocities exceeding the sprint swimming speed of fish. The application of Hidden Markov Models (HMM) to analyze activity states and movement modes of fish from video tracking data demonstrated significant effects of the spatial velocity gradient (SVG) and flow velocity on fish behavior. Notably, SVG emerged as the primary trigger for avoidance reactions when exceeding a threshold of 0.31 msm. Fish exhibited distinct movement patterns under dark and daylight conditions, with more avoidance reactions in darkness. Whereas a considerable proportion of fish in daylight increased their swimming activity in the zone where flow velocity exceeded sprint swimming speed, in dark conditions no activity peak occurred in the same zone. The results illustrate how hydraulic conditions and light influence fish behavior. Integrating the behavioral rules identified in this study into numerical mortality‑risk models could substantially improve their predictive accuracy. This enhanced understanding can support the design and optimization of fish protection solutions at hydropower facilities and pumping stations.

PREFER-IT: A transdisciplinary co-created framework to realise inclusive health AI

Author summary Artificial intelligence (AI) is being used more and more in healthcare to improve diagnosis, treatment, and personalised care. However, if not designed carefully, these technologies can unintentionally increase existing inequalities and exclude certain groups from the benefits of these technologies. In our study, we brought together experts from healthcare, ethics, law, social sciences, and patient advocacy to explore how the application of AI in healthcare can be made more inclusive. During a five-day co-creation workshop in the Netherlands, we worked together to identify key issues and come up with practical solutions. We focused on three main areas: 1) Ensuring diverse voices are heard during the development of AI tools; 2) Making data collection fair and representative; and 3) Creating regulations that protect human rights. From the discussions of the workshop, we created the PREFER-IT framework, which outlines eight key principles for inclusive health AI: • Participatory and co-design approaches, • Representative and diverse data, • Education and digital literacy, • Fairness, • Ethical and legal accountability, • Real-world validation and feedback, • Inclusive communication, • Technical interoperability. This framework helps guide developers, policymakers, and healthcare professionals in creating AI systems that are not only effective but also fair and respectful of all users. Our work emphasises the importance of involving patients and communities in shaping the future of AI.
