Jesus turned and asked his disciples, “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet lose his soul?”. Wow! Isn’t that a crazy question?! In a more modernized version it may read like, “what does it benefit you to have the car of your dreams, the best wife on earth, the largest house on the block, the best shooting bows, the best looking arrows, whatever you value a lot, and then lose the ONLY part of you that will last forever, your soul?”. Think about that for a second. Everything you own is temporary. You’ll leave it to your kids one day to remember you while your soul is eternally somewhere else. So I guess the next question is, how does one obtain an eternity in Heaven? This question is answered multiple times in the bible. Here are a few passages where Jesus answers that question:
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
In summation, you need to believe that Jesus is who He says He is, you need to make his ways your ways and learn more about him and apply it to your life. These are all parts of walking with Him. Believing in him, believing his ways are best, and walking in those ways.
